Gum Recession & Recession Treatment

Gum recession can expose tooth roots, increase sensitivity, and affect the appearance of a smile. We offer several approaches to treating gum recession, including traditional connective tissue grafting, palatal grafting, and alternatives that avoid harvesting tissue from the roof of the mouth when appropriate.

The goal of gum grafting is often to improve root coverage and esthetics, but those are not the only benefits. In many cases, gum grafting is recommended to reinforce thin tissue, improve patient comfort, reduce sensitivity, and help protect the underlying bone from further recession and deterioration.

Even when complete root coverage is not predictable, strengthening the soft tissue around a tooth can improve long-term stability and help reduce the risk of additional gum and bone loss over time.

In select cases, minimally invasive procedures such as the Pinhole Surgical Technique® may also be considered. Treatment recommendations are based on the amount of recession, tissue thickness, esthetic goals, and long-term predictability.
